Rising juniors attend a full summer semester, Summer Arch, between their sophomore and junior years.
While attending the on-campus academic summer semester at Rensselaer, students will receive focused attention from faculty and student life staff during this pivotal point in their educational career. They will also have the opportunity to take advantage of unique cultural, environmental, and professional experiences only available in this region during the summer.
- Summer class sizes will be smaller, especially during the pilot years.

Students will experience Rensselaer like never before! They'll awash in the summer sun, see the region come alive with curated performances and participate in community lunches, trips to shows, natural wonders and more! Summer Arch is also bookended by exciting campus-wide celebrations and chock full of events and opportunities every week.

During Summer Arch, classes will go on field trips to visit local companies and attend lectures from practicing experts. Students will see how wind turbines, medical devices or chips are made, visit Sikorsky's helicopter manufacturing or even go to the studio of a world-renowned artist! There will also be trips to the Adirondacks, local cultural venues, lots of special meals with faculty, opportunities to meet with members of Rensselaer's cabinet, and "Pop-Up" courses on everything from "How to write a patent" to "Learning to play the Sitar."

Summer Arch is a re-centering of the on-campus experience. It is an opportunity for students to build and rebuild relationships throughout all academic areas while preparing them to go back out into the world. Exciting activities are planned for students to reach these goals that are only available during the summer. They include:
In support of CLASS, all students participating in Summer Arch will live on campus for a summer living and learning experience. All residence halls and classes for Summer Arch students will be air conditioned.
Students electing to participate in Summer Arch 2017 summer program will live in the remodeled section of the Quad, specifically, White stacks I-IV, Hunt I, and Hunt II.
Students who register for Summer Arch after January 27, 2017, and wish to live in Institute provided housing, can still live on campus. Please email Sandy Chan or call (518) 276-6284 for Summer Arch housing assistance.
An innovative dining experience will bring students, faculty, and staff together to engage in academic conversations and share life experiences.

Sign-ups for summer intramural leagues will begin late April through mid-May with leagues starting June 5th running through approximately August 17th. Tentative offerings include soccer, softball, basketball, drop-In running club and sand volleyball.

This pop-up class will focus on giving students the opportunity to translate Computer Aided Designs (CAD) into 3-D Prints while acquiring the knowledge essential to producing prototypes to evaluate form, function, and fit features of proposed designs. The skills gained from this class will further serve them as future engineers and designers.
During this 4-hour event, spread over 2 days, students will be given a real life situation of an inventor having nightmares about their innovation gone awry. Through fun learning, practicing ideation and utilizing innovation tools to get innate creative juices flowing, students will have the opportunity to develop an innovation to help get the inventor out of their quagmire.
Microfluidics is the science and technology to precisely control and manipulate nano- or pico- liter volume of fluid to accomplish a biological or chemical purpose.
Microfluidic aims at miniaturizing the capabilities of a regular diagnostic or analytical laboratory on a chip. This miniaturization enhances reactivity, reduces cost and time, enables automation and parallelization, and provide a more accurate model of the physiological environment. Examples of microfluidic-based devices include, but not limited to, Micro-total analytical systems (µ-TAS) to enhance chemical synthesis, lab-on-a-chip (LOC) for medical diagnosis, or a new point-of-care (POC) to enable personalized medicine.
This course will provide a broad view of the microfluidic technology: fluid manipulation methods, relevant microfabrication, and applications (mainly in the biomedical field).
