FAQs: Closure of Sage Avenue Entrance to Academic Campus Beginning May 29

1.    Why is the Sage Avenue entrance to the academic campus closing?
The entrance to the academic campus off Sage Avenue will close starting May 29 as the RPI Facilities Management team conducts an exploratory dig in the area. This dig will repair a low-pressure condensate line serving our steam and heating systems.

Phase I of the project will involve excavating portions of the Sage Avenue entrance to the academic campus in the area between the Ricketts Building and the ’87 Gymnasium.

2.    When will the Sage Avenue entrance to the academic campus be closed?
The entrance to the academic campus off Sage Avenue will close starting May 29 and through the following three to four weeks. Part of the sidewalk between the Ricketts Building and the ’87 Gymnasium will also be closed.

3.    Will Sage Avenue be open?
Sage Avenue will remain open during Phase I of the excavation. If the exploratory dig shows that repairs are needed to the part of the line running beneath Sage Avenue, some of Sage Avenue may close starting in mid-June. The campus community will be notified of any planned closures to Sage Avenue and will receive instructions for accessing campus.

4.    Will RPI parking be open?
All RPI parking lots will remain open during Phase I of the excavation.

5.    Will those who usually park in an RPI lot and cross Sage Avenue to get to campus still be able to access campus this way?
Yes. Pedestrians should follow signage showing where to cross Sage Avenue.

6.    Will there be signage indicating where pedestrians can cross Sage Avenue?
Yes. Pedestrian crossings will be clearly marked.

7.    Will street parking be available on Sage Avenue?
Street parking will not be available on the south side of Sage Avenue between the Ricketts Building and the ’87 Gymnasium. Please follow signs indicating where parking is permitted.

8.    Who is doing the excavation?
A local excavation contractor along with RPI Facilities Management will be doing the work.

9.    What options will there be to drive onto the academic campus?
Vehicles can access the academic campus through the College Avenue entrance.

10.    Is access to ADA accessible parking on campus impacted?
ADA accessible parking on the academic campus will not be accessible from Sage Avenue during the excavation. Please use the College Avenue entrance to access ADA accessible parking.

11.    When can those on campus expect construction noise during the workday?
The expected work hours for the excavation team are 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

12.    Will bus routes or shuttles to RPI be affected?
Bus routes and shuttles to RPI will not be affected during Phase I of the excavation.

13.    Will residents around the RPI campus be affected?
Residents around campus will not be impacted by Phase I of the excavation.

14.    Will deliveries to campus be affected?
Campus deliveries will not be impacted by Phase I of the excavation.

15.    Are there any safety concerns the campus community should be aware of?
No. The excavation area will be surrounded by barricades and fencing, and the condensate line being repaired will not be in use. Water and utilities on campus will not be affected.
