The Career Center Increases Summer Support Resources

Students attending the Spring Career Fair at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute

As Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute prepares to fully launch The Arch 2020 summer semester online for rising juniors, the Center for Career and Professional Development (CCPD) has developed numerous resources to help students prepare for their semester away while building and enhancing their network with our faculty, alumni, and industry partners.

Summer Resources Include:

  1. The Arch Career Readiness Course
This voluntary course will build upon the assignments and activities completed during The Arch Preparation course. This new iteration will focus entirely on how to navigate a virtual employment landscape. Course sections by each school will serve as a resource for job search strategies, employer engagement opportunities, and direct communications with career counselors.
  2. Daily Virtual Workshops
Workshops will cover a variety of career-related topics such as writing personal statements and cover letters, accepting offers, and salary negotiations to assist students with their semester away search. All workshops will be recorded and available to view at any time through the Career Readiness course.
  3. Individualized Career Counseling
Career counselors will be available with extended hours to accommodate students from varying time zones.
  4. Career Communities
Students will have the opportunity to join industry-based career communities that meet virtually throughout the summer. They will learn industry trends, skills needed in that industry, opportunities to connect with employers and alumni in the field, and a plan for how to utilize their away semester to be marketable in the field.
  5. Handshake
Handshake, launching in June, will provide students with a new and significantly improved job board that will include an enhanced student interface, mobile app, and resume and interview preparation platform.
  6. Digital Resume Reviews
Students can have their resume reviewed and critiqued within 48 hours of submission by a member of CCPD’s Career Counseling team.
  7. Weekly School-Specific Newsletter
Developed by the career counselors from the CCPD, each of the five school newsletters covers employer information sessions, semester away opportunities, career resources, and more.
  8. Arch Student Panels
These panels provide students with the opportunity to learn from previous Arch students about virtual internship/co-op onboarding processes and how to make the most of The Arch summer semester and away experience.
  9. Virtual Employer Events
A variety of virtual employer events will be held to inform students about company culture, industry insights, and career opportunities available. Sample organizations include the Department of Homeland Security, Bank of America, and the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA).

“The CCPD staff has used this unfamiliar time to reflect on what we know to be true, everyone is navigating and experiencing this new reality differently. It is our commitment to our students to leverage every platform possible to assist them with navigating this journey in a way that feels supportive, empowering, and met with empathy. This guiding principle has allowed us to move 100% of our services and resources to a virtual platform,” said Erika Cary, associate director for career development at the CCPD. She adds, “Throughout the summer, students will have the continued opportunity to develop a support system with our career counselors for their specific school through the resources and services we have available. By working together, it is our mission to help students explore Arch away opportunities designed to develop career-readiness skills, build their network, and explore careers and industries that align with their values and aspirations. While we may be hundreds of miles apart, we are only a quick email away.”
