Increasing Employer and Student Engagement Through Handshake

To further increase employer and student connections, the Center for Career and Professional Development (CCPD) will be implementing Handshake. Launching early July, Handshake will provide students with a new and significantly improved job board that will include an enhanced student interface, mobile app, and a resume and interview preparation platform.

“After an extensive review and based on student and employer feedback, the CCPD made the decision to secure this powerful platform that will further enable us to connect students with long-term RPI partners and productively engage new ones to serve all our student populations,” said Philip Bruce, director of the CCPD.

Designed specifically with students in mind, Handshake strategically connects them with employers by filtering profile results based on their interests and unique talents to enhance and expedite the recruitment process. Through Handshake, employers have the ability to message students directly with invitations to events, interviews, and to learn about new opportunities. Last year, recruiters sent more than 16 million messages to students via the online platform.

Top employers —including Fortune 500, startups, and nonprofit organizations — are among those actively using Handshake to recruit students. Sample companies include: Amazon, Tesla, JPMorgan Chase & Co., EY LLP, Procter & Gamble (P&G), Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, Bank of America, Citrix, Apple, Citadel, Bristol Myers Squibb, Ayco, a Goldman Sachs Company, and Lockheed Martin.

Unison, a computer software company that the CCPD has developed a strong employer partnership with, is one of the many companies that utilize this platform. When asked about this powerful job board, the Unison human resources team said, “Handshake is an excellent recruiting tool for our company. It is easy to use to post open job positions, and to sign up for career fairs, info sessions, and interviews. It also allows students to email us and apply through Handshake for their ease as well.”

Handshake works hard to safeguard their network of users utilizing a combination of data, machine learning, and the ability for members to flag potential fraudulent companies. Through this combined approach, along with a number of additional safety measures, including a team dedicated to online safety and education, Handshake has established an online environment that puts online safety as a top priority.
