The establishment of a Multicultural Sorority and Fraternity Council at Rensselaer

August 11, 2021

Dear Rensselaer Community Members:

It is with great pleasure that I announce that a Multicultural Sorority and Fraternity Council (MSFC) at Rensselaer has been established to provide governance, advocacy, support, and resources to the recognized culturally based sororities and fraternities which are an active and important part of the fabric that makes up the Rensselaer student experience.

Sororities and fraternities have a longstanding and rich history at RPI which reaches back nearly one-hundred and sixty years. The lineage of that history includes significant markers such as Rensselaer being the place that the nation’s oldest Latino fraternity was established; and, the home to a multicultural Latin-based sorority that has proudly operated independently for the past twenty-five years.

As Rensselaer continues to fulfill its commitment to being a truly inclusive community that strives to achieve diversity and equity, establishing the MSFC is an important step.

The initial member organizations of the Rensselaer Multicultural Sorority and Fraternity Council include:

  • Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated
  • Student members of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated currently seeking Institute recognition
  • Phi Iota Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated
  • Omega Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated
  • Pi Delta Psi Fraternity Incorporated
  • Sigma Delta Sorority, Incorporated

The Dean of Students Office, with the authority delegated by the President of the Institute, herby grants the Multicultural Sorority and Fraternity Council full Institute recognition. The Council may operate as a student organization with full Institute recognition, and all of the benefits afforded.

On behalf of Rensselaer, I wish this organization a long-lived success.

Sincerely,
Travis T. Apgar
Assistant Vice President for Student Life and Dean of Students
