Fall 2021 Orientation and TA Training

IMPORTANT: Due to recent developments regarding the COVID-19 pandemic, the Office of Graduate Education is currently working remotely until further notice.

Fall 2021 Academic Orientation and TA Training will be held online. See below for more details and check back periodically for updates.

 

All new graduate students are required to attend the Academic Orientation Seminar for Graduate Students presented by the Office of Graduate Education. Summer and fall entrants attend the orientation in August. Spring entrants attend the orientation in January.

Many departments/schools offer additional orientation activities. Contact your department directly for more information and your expected arrival date.

International and exchange students should also review the information for new students from the Office of International Services for Students and Scholars.

All new Teaching Assistants are required to participate in our TA Training Program, which will help you understand the details and the overriding importance of your role as a teaching assistant. All new teaching assistants must attend regardless of prior teaching experience or previous attendance at Rensselaer.

Fall 2021 Academic Orientation

Please Note: There will be no formal, live program or session meeting on this day.  Material will be posted to this website throughout the day and the LMS component will be available for students to complete required assessments as part of the orientation.

Learning Management System (LMS) component and assessments:

LMS Tutorial and Orientation Instruction Video (from Fall 2021-update coming soon).

All newly admitted graduate students, including newly admitted accelerated and Co-Terminals, are required to complete the Academic Orientation which will be conducted on Rensselaer's Learning Management System.

Register for the course through SIS. Please register as soon as possible so you will have access by August 27, 2021.

Note: Students will not see the course in their LMS before August 27th.

You can find the course through a Class Search (Subject – Administrative Courses; Course Number – ADMN-6700-01, CRN - 51867 or through the Register Add/Drop page). This will appear on your transcript as a zero-credit required course (no cost); a Satisfactory (S) or Unsatisfactory (U) grade will be assigned at the end of the semester.

The site for the online component will be available the weekend prior to the start of the semester. In addition, it will not be available until 24-48 hours after you register for it so please register as soon as you can.

Learning Management System (LMS) component and assessments (see below)

LMS Program Details:

All new TAs must complete the training program in its entirety which includes a component in the Learning Management System (LMS). Registration is required. Register for the course through SIS. You can find the course through a Class Search (Subject –Administrative Courses; Course Number – ADMN-6800-01, CRN - 51868 or through the Register Add/Drop page. This will appear on your transcript as a zero-credit required course (no cost); a Satisfactory (S) or Unsatisfactory (U) grade will be assigned at the end of the semester.  The LMS component will be available the weekend before classes begin.

Please do not register unless you have received an award letter from your department confirming your teaching assistantship.

International Students who will be TAs who have a TOEFL speaking score less than 26 will be required to take COMM 1960 Effective Communication for Class Pedagogy. This is a one-credit course designed to help international teaching assistants develop their skills for communicating with students and colleagues in an academic setting.
