National Fellowships and Scholarships for Undergraduates

Some opportunities may require a Rensselaer nomination or endorsement, while others allow students to apply directly.  Some awards are only available to U.S. citizens/permanent residents.  Make sure to check all eligibility criteria carefully and contact the program sponsor with questions.

Scholarship and Fellowship Opportunities

American Association of University Women Scholarships and Grants - provides funding for women’s graduate education, investing in women who go on to change the world.

Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship - supports undergraduate study in the fields of mathematics, engineering and the natural sciences as preparation for research careers in these areas. Open to full-time matriculated sophomores and juniors who intend to pursue a research career in  an aforementioned field of study.   Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents, and a Rensselaer nomination is required.  Contact:  Professor Gustavo Crembil, Associate Dean of Undergraduate Education, crembg@rpi.edu.  

Department of Energy Computational Science Graduate Fellowship - for graduating seniors who plan full-time, uninterrupted study towards a Ph.D. at an accredited U.S. university in fields that use high-performance computing to solve complex science and engineering problems. U.S. citizens/permanent residents only.

Department of Energy Scholars Program  - offers opportunities to undergraduates, graduate students, and recent graduates to receive hands-on experiences that provide them with an understanding of the mission, operations, and culture of the DOE.  Most opportunities take place during the summer.  U.S. citizens only. 

Fulbright U.S. Student Program -  funds American citizens to study, conduct research, or teach English abroad.  Interested students should visit the RPI Office of Graduate Education website for more information:  https://graduate.rpi.edu/funding-and-fellowships

Gates Cambridge Scholarship -  full-cost scholarships funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation awarded to outstanding applicants from countries outside the UK to pursue a postgraduate degree in any subject available at the University of Cambridge.

The Hertz Foundation Fellowship  - for college seniors, first-year graduate students, or those in a gap year preparing to apply to graduate school and pursue a PhD  in the applied physical and biological sciences, mathematics, or engineering.  U.S. citizens and permanent residents only.

Institute for Broadening Participation Pathways to Science - a comprehensive source of information on programs and professional development resources for current and prospective undergraduate students in STEM fields with the goal of increasing diversity in the STEM workforce.

Marshall Scholarship - Funds one or two years of postgraduate degree study in the U.K.

NASA Internships and Fellowships - a variety of opportunities exist for undergraduates and recent college graduates.  Visit the NASA site for details and eligibility criteria.

U.S. National Science Foundation Research Experience for Undergraduates - supports active research participation by undergraduate students in any of the areas of research funded by the National Science Foundation.
