All new graduate students are required to attend the Academic Orientation Seminar for Graduate Students presented by the Office of Graduate Education. Summer and fall entrants attend the orientation in August. Spring entrants attend the orientation in January.
Many departments/schools offer additional orientation activities. Contact your department directly for more information and your expected arrival date.
International and exchange students should also review the information for new students from the office of International Services for Students and Scholars.
All new Teaching Assistants are required to attend our TA Training Program, which will help you understand the details and the overriding importance of your role as a teaching assistant. All new teaching assistants must attend regardless of prior teaching experience or previous attendance at Rensselaer.

The program will include morning and afternoon sessions along with lunch and a resouce fair. In addition to the in-person orientation, you will be required to complete an online orientation on Rensselaer's Learning Management System. Register for the course through SIS. You can find the course through a Class Search (Subject – Administrative Courses; Course Number – ADMN-6700-01 or through the Register Add/Drop page. This will appear on your transcript as a zero-credit required course (no cost); a Satisfactory (S) or Unsatisfactory (U) grade will be assigned at the end of the semester.
The site for the online component will not be available until late Friday, August 23. In addition, it will not be available until 24 - 48 hours after you register for it. If you have technical difficulties, please send an email to email@example.com and provide as much detail as possible, including the name of the course/course number, your RCS User ID, and a description of the problem.

International Teaching Assistant Training. Most new teaching assistants for whom English is a second language must take the SPEAK test of oral proficiency to assess oral communication skills. Note that previous TA experience at another university does not necessarily waive this requirement. Language testing information is posted in the Program Information document.
